Spiritual Direction or Soul Friending
Spiritual Direction or Soul Friending can be described as a niche or specialty form of coaching, where the focus of the coaching is to journey with a person as they grow in their relationship with God. All the skills and abilities a coach has can be used to help a person deepen their spiritual awareness. Unlike most coaching relationships, soul friending tends to be open ended and last many years. It is also more focused on the quality of the journey and less on specific goal achievement.
In addition to deepening a person's relationship with God, Soul Friending also pays attention to the person's relationship with the world, and how they express their spirituality in daily living. This is a process of discernment in which the person discovers their God given talents and how they can benefit to others. Frederick Buechner describes vocation in these terms:
The place God Calls you is the place
where your
deep gladness and the world's hunger meet.
On the Coaching Spiral soul friending is about helping people grow in their awareness of God, the Source of their Existence, and their purpose and identity which flows from God. It is about helping people say:
Yes! to God
Yes! to Their Neighbor
Yes! to Them Self
