Introduction to Appreciative Coaching

In the introductory coach training class participants will be taught essential coaching strategies, based in the appreciative inquiry approach, to establish a coaching relationship and to help people make transformational breakthroughs in their life and work.

This introductory program is a precursor to our Advanced Coach Training and is also part of our Certificate in Appreciative Coaching program.

• Setting the Coaching Agenda
• Telephone Based and in Person Coaching
• Developing Vision, Purpose and Plan
• Identifying Resources, Moving From Problems to Solutions
• Understanding Human Motivation
• Moving Client from Fear to Love
• Personal Stretching to Seek Excellence
• Accountability and Valuing Outcomes

Please Note: This introductory program will also be offered as a week long program Foundations of Appreciative Coaching. This program will integrate the Introduction to Appreciative Inquiry material with the Introduction to Appreciative Coaching in the week-long format. While the information provided is the same as the two introductory courses, the material is sequenced differently to allow the coaching to be introduced at the beginning of the week.

Learning Objectives

• To provide participants with a basic understanding of the work of Appreciative Coaching utilizing an Appreciative Inquiry philosophy and process and the knowledge base of Transformational and Executive Coaching.
• To provide participants with an incarnational model of joining with others to establish a coaching agenda and co-create preferred outcomes.
• To provide participants with appreciative models of organizational development for working as a consultant with congregations and other faith based organizations.

Continuing Education Credit

This program qualifies for 15 contact hours of continuing education credit.

Who Should Attend This Program

• Clergy
• Psychologists, Consultants and Counselors
  who are also clergy or who work with clergy and churches
• Leaders who coach or mentor staff and volunteers
• Life coaches who want to offer coaching from an appreciative perspective
• Spiritual Directors

While primarily oriented toward clergy this program is also open to those who have substantial experience as a Counselor or Mentor and who are interested in Coaching appreciatively with clergy and who can reflect theologically and psychologically on their coaching.

Attendance is limited to 14 participants to allow maximum contact with the instructor during the practice and experiential exercises.

Eligibility Requirements to take Appreciative Coach Training

The Introduction to Appreciative Coaching program is built on the core understanding of Appreciative Inquiry and is open to those who have completed the Clergy Leadership Institute Appreciative Inquiry training.

In addition, to participate in our Appreciative Coach training programs participants must have:

• A graduate level degree (MDiv, MA, MS etc.) in the helping sciences
• A graduate level degree (MBA, MS, etc.) in business or science plus 3 years of experience in a leadership role.
• An undergraduate degree (BA, BS etc.) plus 7 years of experience in a leadership role.

Note: Work experience must be in a leadership capacity that is applicable to the work of clergy and others in leadership roles. In addition all candidates must be able to reflect theologically and psychologically on their life and work.

This program usually starts after lunch on the third day of the appreciative inquiry training.

Note: The above schedule includes meals for commuters. When residential accommodation is provided, residential participants will also be provided with Breakfast and Supper during the course of the week.

Costs

Participants who register at the same time for the consecutive Introduction to Appreciative Inquiry and The Introduction to Coaching program will receive a $50 discount.

Accommodation and facility use fees are extra and are dependent on the training locations and will be specified on the registration forms. Meals between sessions are typically provided for commuters.

Presenter

Rob Voyle is an ordained Episcopal priest, psychologist, and executive coach. He is the Director of the Clergy Leadership Institute. Rob was an original faculty member, and taught for five years at the College of Executive Coaching where he taught and coached hundreds of personal and executive coaches how to use appreciative inquiry as a basis for their coaching work.
