Incarnating the Message
Preaching From an Appreciative Perspective

This is a new program that is being developed and will be first presented in November of 2006

The primary objectives of this program are:

  • To develop preaching strategies based in the appreciative inquiry perspective
  • To preach incarnationally, from a place of being joined with the congregation, rather than from an adversarial perspective
  • To learn the "place inside" from which you can preach authentically and passionately
Getting in the Way of the Gospel

I often hear clergy say that they preach best when they manage to get out of the way of the message. This doesn't make much sense to me, because clearly the best way to get out of the way of a sermon is to stay in bed on Sunday. I think good preaching is really about how we get in the way of the message or how we incarnate the message. When we look at the Gospels we can clearly see the unique finger prints of the authors. We can see how John gets in the way of his Gospel and how Matthew gets in the way of his Gospel. Likewise your parishioners can identify how you get in the way of your Gospel.

Does the way you get in the way of your message obscure the Gospel
or does the way you get in the way bring humanity and life to the Gospel?

It is only when you fully show up in the pulpit and incarnate your message that your preaching has life and is life giving.

This workshop is designed to help you discover your authentic God given voice so that you may embody and proclaim your gospel so that it incarnationally becomes The Gospel.
