Appreciative Leadership
for Managing Change

Leadership Training and specifically Appreciative Leadership Training is at the heart of what the Clergy Leadership Institutes does. See About Us for more information on our understanding of leadership development in the Church.

Because of our focus on leadership development this program is a required class in both our Certificate in Appreciative Coaching and our Certificate in Appreciative Interim Ministry

This program fulfills the residential requirement of AIM2 and Coaching Competent Leaders.

The Need for Appreciative Leadership Training

The ability to lead groups of people through change is rapidly becoming a core requirement of successful ministry. Research on leadership development has shown that leadership is not simply an innate ability of extraordinary people, but is actually the things ordinary people do to get groups of people to achieve extraordinary things. Research has also indicated that leadership can be taught and learned as a series of specific competencies.

The Appreciative Leadership for Managing Change training program is a unique blend of:

  • Theological reflection
  • Appreciative inquiry
  • Organizational psychology
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Leadership theory
  • Executive coaching

The training is arranged in the following sequential format:

Eligibility

Training in appreciative clergy leadership is open to any clergy person who has been ordained for two years and is currently serving in a full time ministry, or for those participating in the Appreciative Interim Ministry Program, or for those in the Appreciative Coaching Certificate Program.

  • Psychologists, Consultants and Counselors

Pre-Training Leadership Assessment

Upon registration for the training participants will receive instructions and access codes to complete several online assessment inventories that are commonly used in the executive coaching and leadership development field. The results will be incorporated into the intensive training session. One of the instruments the "Leadership Practices Inventory" is a 360 degree instrument and will require several members of the clergy person's congregation to also complete the inventory. Because this will take time to accomplish early registration and planning is essential.

Introduction to Appreciative Leadership Practices

This five day intensive will use a variety of learning strategies including:

  • Didactic presentations
  • Personal practice and experience of appreciative process
  • Leadership simulation exercises
  • Personal reflection and meditation
  • Process groups
  • Coaching groups
  • Corporate prayer
  • Opportunity for creative reflection on the past and anticipation of the future

This program is restricted to a maximum of 14 participants per session to allow the participants
to establish a supportive and reflective learning environment.

Training Objectives

  • To provide participants a background understanding of the theory and dynamics of leadership as a distinct behavior in contrast to other ministry and pastoral skills.
  • To provide participants an understanding of organizational change dynamics and the role of the leader in facilitating and coaching change.
  • Participants in the coach training program will be able to use these understandings when coaching clergy to become competent leaders.

Training Outcome

Following training participants should be able to positively and uniquely answer the three leadership questions:

  • Why would people follow me?
  • Where would people end up if they did follow me?
  • How would they be treated on the way?

Training Schedule

A typical leadership training schedule is as follows. Sessions include didactic presentations, personal reflection, relevant Bible study and the daily offices from the Episcopal tradition.

Attention is paid to managing personal energy during the training program while maximizing participants opportunities to learn. Because this training is intense we recommend people make appropriate travel plans and can begin the first days training rested so as to get the best possible return for your tuition expenses.

What Participants Say

The Rev. Robert Voyle was invaluable to making our search process a success. He led the committee members in Appreciative Inquiry exercises to build up the relationships of the team members and to begin to articulate some common understandings of the core values of our diocese.

Rob coached us to keep a clear perspective of what we had discerned as the skills and gifts necessary for our next bishop and to let this guide our work. He was also at the other end of the telephone or email when specific issues came up that would be helped by his experience and knowledge.

Joanna Shreve, Co-Chair Diocese of El Camino Real Bishop Search Committee

Rob's combination of organizational savvy, teaching skills, theological & spiritual integration, and ability to rapidly build supportive, learning communities is quite simply the best in any of the churches today.
Gray Temple, Episcopal Priest, Author & Coach

After 45 years in the pastoral ministry and attending three events led by Rob Voyle, I have finally learned a better way to help church leaders help themselves and the people they serve.
John Wilkerson, Director: Church Leadership Coaching & Consulting

Rob's appreciative coach training helped me to rethink the way I approach and provide therapy; Thanks!
Dr. George Moses, Pastoral Counselor

Rob will enhance your ability to delight in yourself, your neighbor and God through his insightful, practical, loving, professionally grounded, appreciative and often mischievous coaching and teaching skills; and that will make you a better leader and citizen in God's creation.
Ed Leidel, Episcopal Bishop and Congregational Coach in the Canadian Diocese of Huron

"I have been fully engaged emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. Thank you for touching me at the core of my being."
M.E. Member of the UCC Church.

"Of all the training I have been to, your notes are the ones I keep coming back to time and again for practical resources."
P.W. Conference Pastor.

Rob's training is full of heart, wit, and passion.
E.R. Executive Coach

Rob's educational model brings body, mind and spirit together. I have been challenged intellectually, transformed spiritually, touched emotionally, gathering in communally. He came into my life at just the right time.

Jean Holmes, Presbyterian Pastor
